Transfer Case

The transfer case is attached to the transmission and is responsible for delivering power to all 4 wheels in a 4 wheel drive or all wheel drive vehicle. The transfer case is either gear or chain driven and connects to front and rear axles with drive shafts. In a 4x4 truck or SUV the driver is able to select between 2wd and 4wd with the turn of a knob or by moving a lever that’s directly attached to the transfer case. AWD cars also use transfer cases but with these applications the transfer case is not selectable and is locked into all wheel drive at all times. A lot of older 4 wheel drive systems were not able to select 4wd without stopping the vehicle, locking the hubs and then shifting the transfer case into 4 wheel drive. Modern 4x4 Tucks, SUV’s and Cars are now either full time all wheel drive systems or shift on the fly with auto locking hubs so that you no longer need to get out of the vehicle or stop to engage the 4x4 system. Replacing a transfer case can be very costly just due to parts alone, new or rebuilt transfer cases can cost thousands.
